Skincare Tips for Aging Gracefully
It's a self-evident truth — the years will take a toll on our skin. So the question is: What steps can we take to make the aging process as easy on our skin as possible?
As you get older, your habits, priorities and preferences about everything from entertainment to food will probably change. The same patterns hold true for your skin. Your body's largest organ will experience a variety of changes in color, elasticity and texture, so it's important to know what products will offer the most benefits at each age — and you may find them in the grocery aisles:
- 40s — Years of sun exposure may become more evident during this decade when dark spots commonly appear. But the acid in citrus fruits can help even out color. Lemon juice applied to the skin with a cotton ball twice every day can help remove the top layer of discolored skin.
- 50s — As your hormones change, your skin may become more sensitive. Instead of using your regular soapy cleanser, try plain yogurt instead. Filled with fat, lactic acid and protein, the dairy product offers a gentler way to wash.
- 60s — Dry skin may become prevalent during this decade, so adding moisture is key. Once or twice a week, apply a natural mask of mashed, oil-rich avocado to the face for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
In general, also look to various oils in the grocery store. Extra-virgin olive oil is a luxurious option to apply to skin after a shower. Coconut oil can also add healthy fats and moisture to skin – along with a light, pleasant scent.
No matter your age, it's important to take care of your skin when you're outside. While it's fun and relaxing to bask in its warm glow, the sun can be one of the body's greatest enemies if skin is left unprotected. Simple but true, these three steps are your best defense:
- Twenty minutes before heading outdoors, lather on sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. If you're sweating, swimming or spending time outdoors for two hours or longer, remember to reapply as directed on the bottle. Don't forget your feet and ears — two commonly neglected body parts.
- Wear a hat with a wide brim when you're on the beach or working in the yard.
- Don't forget to put on shades before you step outside. The skin around the eyes is just as susceptible as the rest of the body — and your eyes are also at risk. Choose lenses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB radiation.
