What to Expect
Upon your arrival at the ER, you'll first be seen by a triage nurse who will take your vital signs and ask you about any allergies, current medications and your medical history. The triage nurse will determine your level of priority, meaning that the most severe cases will be taken to treatment rooms immediately and those with less critical conditions will be asked to wait in the lobby.
As soon as one is available, you'll be placed in a treatment room. While you wait, please remember to:
- Check with the triage nurse before using the bathroom, in case you'll need a urine specimen to complete tests.
- Do not eat or drink anything before checking with the triage nurse.
- Let the triage nurse know if there are any changes in your condition, such as new symptoms or ones with more severity.
After seeing the triage nurse, the registration clerk will ask for some basic information and he/she may also ask for a form of identification, such as a driver's license or photo ID.
Plan of Care
Once you have been seen by a physician, you can expect to wait for any test results. Based on these results, your physician will make decisions regarding treatment, hospital admission or discharge. If you are to be admitted, we will contact your primary care physician or an on-call physician if you don't have one. He/she will then be responsible for you once transferred out of our department.
Average wait times for tests:
- Blood tests: 30-60 minutes
- CT scans: 60 minutes
- Ultrasounds: 60 minutes
- Urine tests: 15-30 minutes
- X-rays: 30 minutes
Discharge
We will leave you with instructions on follow-up care during discharge. If they don't make sense, please ask us and we'll explain. If you've been prescribed medication, we will talk you through what they are and how to take them, as well as any possible side effects. You will also hear about any necessary follow-up appointments, such as with a specialist or your regular physician. If you don't have a physician, we can also refer you to one.
